Thing 12: Do You Digg?

For this blog post, I decided to check out the stories on the top pages of all these sites on a Monday afternoon.

Mixx: the only interesting story on the page was the (short) interview with the guy who created a page that said:

Stumbleupon warning
Stumbleupon has been temporarily disabled, because you have used it too much.
Stop stumbling and disable stumbleupon toolbar
Do your work
Don’t think about stumbling

That was funny.

Digg: This one is a little more promising. There was a picture of the Flying Spaghetti Monster! Seriously, while there were some articles from mainstream sites, the articles tended to be rather sensational, even the two that were law-related and, therefore, presumably relevant.

Newsvine: A lot of campaign coverage; no surprise there. At least it is a little more serious. One nice thing is the local Star Tribune box down in the bottom corner.

Reddit: There was a link to Scientific American, but it was about Batman.

StumbleUpon: Didn’t stumble upon anything interesting today.

The bottom line? These tools may be useful for public libraries, but they don’t seem very valuable for my very specialized library. And I’m not sure I really need to add to my personal information overload.
